ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
It is a pleasure to acknowledge all those who have been a part of this book’s journey – family, friends, teachers and students. I have been especially fortunate in the writing of this book to have received all the necessary assistance at the appropriate time that I needed it. To these mentors and guides, I express my gratitude and thanks. Prof. R.N. Iyengar’s encouragement and initial suggestions helped me get started in turning my notes into a full-fledged book. Whenever I needed help, Prof. Sampadananda Mishra was always there to provide me with further assistance and expert advice. His unending patience helped me through the various ups and downs that accompanied the writing of the book. I am deeply grateful to Prof. Radhavallabh Tripathi who so generously read through the entire work, and provided much valuable advice for improvement, from pointing out subtleties of the language to the various regional interpretations of Bhasa. I am eternally indebted to Prof. Gangadharan Nair who answered every question of mine with patience and precision. I am blessed to have learned the little that I know from him. Prof. George Cardona provided some very useful starting points of inquiry, and Prof. Deven Patel’s kindness facilitated that process. Many happy hours were spent in the company of Dr. H. Rangachar and Dr. Sunita Vaze, and their largeness of heart and gentle humour permeates all the Sanskrit works that we have read together. The folks at Samskrita Bharati who provided me with every conceivable resource that I needed are too numerous to mention. Sumit Kumar was a constant rock of support as this book went through its final stages of editing and typesetting.
My husband and our two favorite children put up with endless hours of my being there and yet not there. Thank you for being mine when I was barely yours, for the many meals served up with creativity and panache, for the gusto that greeted every announcement of progress and every milestone, with the accompanying hopeful queries of “Does that mean it is finally done?” My father’s enthusiasm for this book was infectious and stirring, just as he has always wholeheartedly supported every one of my eccentric projects. And our beloved Unnimama, who approved of this book as an idea, before even a single line was written, and who sent me reams upon reams of information, thank you for believing in me.
Without my students for whom this translation was first begun, this book would never have seen the light of day. Akul, Ammu, Anirudh, Anju, Bharat, Keshav, Vaani and Vishnu brought joy and enthusiasm to each class and many useful suggestions along the way. Teaching this most ancient of languages to children is a uniquely fulfilling experience, and I have learned as much from you as I hope you have from me. And my adult learners who are ever young at heart in their pursuit of knowledge - Geetha, Ramaa, Ramaa, Prashanth, Raj, Sati, Sharadha and Vidya - this journey would not have been the same without your commitment, love and support.
